Over the past three months, Egypt has bought 3.5 million tons of wheat from local farmers as it works to achieve self-sufficiency and weather the effects of the global crisis caused by the Russian war on Ukraine.

L’Egypte dépend très majoritairement du blé ukrainien et russe pour sa stabilité alimentaire. Alors quand Vladimir Poutine menace d’approvisionner uniquement les « amis » de la Russie, le pays tremble sous la menace d’une pénurie qui aurait des conséquences sociales dévastatrices.

CAIRO, Egypt – Spring is in full bloom across Ukraine and the winter wheat will soon be ready for harvest. The Russian invasion, however, has everyone focused on mere survival, and the fighting will likely ensure much of this wheat never gets harvested. And the wheat stored in silos near Odesa can't make it to market because of Russia's blockade of ports on the Black Sea.
Eighty percent of the cultivated area of wheat in Egypt would be harvested in May, said Head of the Egyptian Farmers’ Syndicate Hussein Abdel Rahman Abu Saddam in a statement on Tuesday. “Most of the cultivated areas of wheat turned ripe so that the quantities of wheat supply have gradually increased to reach the largest rate at the end of this month and the beginning of next month,” he said in the statement.
